The Tipton Amateur Radio Society was formed in January of 1990, in Herb Harrington's Garage / HAM Shack, located in Tipton County, Covington, TN. We have been very active in Amateur Radio ever since, participating in A.R.E.S., R.A.C.E.S., and M.A.R.S. events.
In May of 2017, TARS, supported by generous donations from the
community, moved the repeater and antenna from its previous location
at Jerry Covington's home, near Covington, Tennessee, to its current
home on a lesser-used water tower in Brighton, Tennessee.
The TARS repeater is completely independent of the current power
grid, being solar powered. This will enable TARS to respond to
emergency communication needs even during times of long-term power
grid outages.
Our meetings are held on the third of Monday of each month at the
Atoka Town Hall, 400 Atoka Munford Road, Atoka, TN., at 7:00 PM.
All interested persons are invited to attend, whether member or not.
Anyone with an interest in amateur radio, especially any having
concerns dealing with TARS, are encouraged to attend and participate.
TARS strives to serve the community and welcomes anyone with questions
concerning our operations or equipment.
No meeting minutes posted.
We participate in all Amateur Radio Emergency Service®
(ARES) and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES)
activities. Volunteer Examiner testing services are offered, from both
WCARS and ARRL VE's, prior to our monthly meetings at the Atoka
Town Hall, Atoka, TN. Anyone so interested, please let us know in
advance of a scheduled meeting, preferably at least 3 weeks prior. If
a different time is desired, please contact TARS Secretary, Bill
Hughes (KI4BIY), with your request.
The Society is dedicated to serving the community through emergency
communications services, and to promoting Amateur Radio in the Western
Tennessee area.
Our A.R.E.S. Net is held every Thursday evening at 7:30 PM on the 145.490 repeater system, KE4ZBI (-600 Hz offset, 100 Hz PL tone). All licensed amateur radio operators are invited to check in regardless of TARS membership.
